But first, let me tell you about my ice skating story before starting to learn how to ice skate.
When I was 11 years old, I watched a film and my ice skating story has begun. The film’s name was Ice Princess. (2005). This film’s topic was a hardworking girl’s changing life, due to her ice skating love. When I watched this film, I wondered about ice skating too much and wanted to do it! I already had a roller skate and I was skating at my school garden all day. It was my favorite sport. Therefore, I wanted to go ice skating rink and experience this feeling as soon as possible. Then my father took me to the rink and it was awesome! Because I glided on ice very well without any help.
The reason I glided very well was my roller skating experience. Because both of the sports are really similar to each other, especially the gliding techniques. So that, if you want to learn how to ice skate, you may start with roller skating. It will make you feel more comfortable on ice at the beginning. And also you can practice roller skating whenever you want! You don’t need to pay for the rink.
Finally, I want to share Ice Princess trailer with you. If you like ice skating, I think you’ll love this film too much!
Now its time to learn how to ice skate and the golden rules about skating!
FIRST RULE : COMFORTABLE OUTFITS
Before learning how to ice skate, you should learn what to wear on ice rink. I know that, it is really cold on the ice rink but you should wear comfortable and lighter clothing which let you move easily. You should prefer lighter clothes like a fitted top and tights. You can dress in layers so when you get too hot, you can take off the clothing. Because when you start to skate, your body starts to warm up.
Furthermore, you should wear gloves on the ice skating rink so that you can protect your hands from getting injured when you fall down. Besides, you should prefer microfiber socks, in this way you can keep your feet warm while skating. You should avoid wearing cotton socks because they won’t absorb the moisture and leave your feet cold. Finally, don’t forget to wear a helmet if it is your first time on the ice skating rink.
TIGHTEN YOUR SKATES CORRECTLY
Now you are ready to learn how to ice skate. My first suggestion about ice skating is don’t be in a hurry to buy a skate because they are a little expensive. You can rent an ice skate from the place where you go skating, so that you can use it at the beginning. If you love and decide to do this sport regularly, you can buy your own ice skate.
If you want to learn how to ice skate, you should learn how to tighten skates correctly first. When you don’t feel comfortable on the ice because of the skates, you can’t move on the rink safely. You should tighten your skates securely. If they are too loose or too tight, you’ll loose your balance and it causes you to fall. Especially, the area your foot and ankle bends, must be comfortable and also tighten very well. You should pay attention to that area!
HOW TO ICE SKATE: FIRST STEPS ON THE ICE SKATING RINK
When you get on the ice rink, you can hold the rail first. Every indoor ice skating rink, have this kind of rail for beginners. When you feel more safe, you can start to march on the rink. Hold your arms up and bend your knees to stay balanced then march in place. When you feel safety while marching in place, start to move your body. You should turn out your toes a little bit and keep doing baby marches forward. In this way, your body will get used to stay balanced on ice while gliding.
Gliding is the first step of learning how to ice skate. However, you can glide faster if you understand how to do it. If you learn to glide slowly and it starts to come easy to you, you can try to gliding faster by using your knees. All you need to do is bending your knees and stroking. Stroking is really similar with gliding. After marching, lift one foot as you glide, set that foot down, and lift the other. Keep doing it when you feel much comfortable and balanced.
Additionally, never look your feet when you skating because it may cause some accidents on ice and also it makes you feel unbalanced. You should always look at your surroundings.
HOW TO ICE SKATE: LEARN HOW TO FALL SAFELY
It is very important to learn how to fall before learn how to ice skate. Because you can’t know when you are going to be falling on the rink. So you should try it before it happens.
If you feel like to falling, relax and take the fall. Falling is really normal in this sport. Here are the steps you need to follow while falling: First, you should bend your knees and put your arms inside to you and try to fall sideways. In this way, you’ll protect your wrists from injuries.
If you are ready to get up, you should sit on your knees then one knee up and place both hands on your knee. Push yourself and you will safely stand on the ice rink again.
LEARN HOW TO STOP WHILE GLIDING OR STROKING
It is an important part of learning how to ice skate. When you need to stop you should be able to do that. Therefore, it will be better to practice how to stop on the ice rink. You can use the rails for this job. Hold on the rail and all you need to do is make some snow with your skates! You should push the flat part of your blades against the ice with one foot. Put one foot out and scrap the ice with this technique. In this way, you can stop on the ice safely and slowly.
